STARTING JANUARY OFF BY NEVE MACRAE

It seems as January has come and gone in the blink of an eye! I am going to write a short recap of what has happened in the bilingual classes this past month and my opinions on the student’s progress.

Fourth ESO are extremely hard-working. They are focused yet they have a good balance and know how to have fun. In our English classes, we focus mainly on conversation and utilising the grammar concepts that are taught. At the beginning of the year many of the students were shy, but their confidence has grown exponentially. I see that they feel more relaxed while speaking. When students are outside of the classroom, in the halls or during break time, they speak to me in English. They ask questions and talk to me about their weekend all while having fun. We have gotten to know each other more on a personal level. Our conversations are a great transmission of culture. I learn about small town pueblo Spanish life and they learn about Canada. I am so proud of all of their hard work. I know they can work just as hard to grow even more before the end of the year!

First ESO students are so much fun! I spend most of my time with them during the school week, so we’ve gotten to know each other pretty well. The first year students have grown leaps and bounds. In the beginning they had a limited knowledge of English, but little by little they are growing. Their effort and curiosity in language is what has allowed them to flourish. The teachers and I incorporate English classroom language into each subject and encourage asking questions in English. Every student tries their best to listen, understand and form questions. I am so proud of their consistent effort. We have a lot to learn and work on and I am so excited for everyone to see their progress!

I am overwhelmed by the support that everyone has given me at IES Nuestra Señora de la Estrella. Students who I don’t teach say hello in the hallway and try their best to engage with me. I know speaking a foreign language can be daunting at times especially with a native speaker, but everyone has gone out of their way to immerse themselves as much as they can and learn little by little. There is a lot to learn and work on, but I am so excited for the students and teachers to see how much progress has been made over course of the year! Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your community. I am forever appreciative.

STOP! REFLEXIONAMOS SOBRE EL BILINGUISMO EN LA ESTRELLA

Ya ha pasado un trimestre desde que el instituto IES Ntra. Sra. de la Estrella se embarcó en el programa bilingüe, creo que debemos hacer una parada para así mirar atrás, reflexionar sobre qué aspectos pueden mejorar y qué logros hemos obtenido desde que comenzó la aventura. Si ponemos una balanza, llegamos a esta reflexión:

Pensamos que el alumnado ha perdido su miedo a hablar en inglés. Tras la rutina diaria tanto con los profesores y con la auxiliar Neve, parece que no les da tanta vergüenza comunicarse en la lengua extranjera y por tanto, ha mejorado la competencia lingüística. Un punto muy positivo ya que es el pilar más importante del programa bilingue.

Por otro lado, pensamos que todavía, el alumnado debe trabajar más la  lectura y la competencia escrita en lengua extranjera de manera que pueda desarrollar esta destreza en las asignaturas bilingües. Es muy importante el trabajo diario en casa, estar muy atentos en clase y la adquisición del nuevo vocabulario diario para que poco a poco pueda desarrollar preguntas de contenido no lingüístico en otro idioma. Y así entender y comunicar en inglés nuevos contenidos subiendo el nivel de la lengua extranjera. Somos conscientes de este reto y la mejora, pero es muy importante que el alumnado ponga de su parte con trabajo diario y esfuerzo. De esta manera será más fácil ayudarle en clase con los contenidos ya trabajados y así se resolverán fácilmente las dudas en clase. Pero si no se trabaja, ni estudia poco a poco lo visto en clase es más difícil conseguir y transmitir los objetivos del programa. Tanto las profesoras de inglés como el profesorado bilingue está a la disposición del alumnado para poder ayudarle en todo lo necesario para facilitar el aprendizaje en inglés.

Estos consejos e ingredientes son la receta perfecta bilingüe:

Llevar al día con trabajo y esfuerzo poco a poco lo que se va viendo en clase, tener una actitud positiva hacia el idioma, participar en las actividades planteadas por el programa bilingue así como escuchar mucha música en inglés, así como ver tus series o películas favoritas son éxito seguro del aprendizaje y adquisición del idioma.

Por ello, a pesar de ser conscientes del número elevado del alumnado en clase, de ser la primera vez que se tiene asignaturas bilingues pensamos que el programa va poco a poco andando y sobre todo nos quedamos con la motivación del 90% del alumnado con todo lo planificado desde que empezamos.

Tras esta parada de reflexión nos quedamos con el entusiasmo, la participación y el intento del alumnado por querer comunicarse en otra idioma. Creemos que este aspecto ha beneficiado mucho al alumnado que esté en un programa bilingüe y por tanto, estamos satisfechos; por otro lado, somos conscientes que el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera es un proceso lento y lleno de esfuerzo. Poco a poco, con actitud positiva y trabajo el camino bilingüe dará sus frutos.

CORDOBA DAY TRIP BY NEVE MACRAE

Neve MacRae Day Trip to Cordoba with 4 ESO

On Wednesday I had the opportunity to go with the fourth ESO classes to Cordoba.
I am a language assistant to the fourth ESO classes, but when we do activities it’s mostly about academics.
This was a great opportunity for me to connect more with the students
and learn about their interests while being in a casual setting.

The students were divided into two groups. One group led by Borja went to play in a volleyball tournament.

Maria José and Inés were group leaders of the second group,

which I was a part of, and we went to the Mezquita-Cathedral of Cordoba.

We left Villa del Rio early in the morning and took the bus to Cordoba.

While it was not considered a bilingual trip, the students all tried very hard to speak to me in English.

I really appreciated them trying their best and making me feel like a part of the group.

Once the first group was dropped off, we went to meet Inés on the Puente Romano.

She led us to a café to have breakfast. This was my first time having churros y chocolate.

The students helped to explain the best way to eat the churros either by dipping them in chocolate

or having them plain with sugar. I definitely learned a lot from the students.

Now, I feel I am a master at eating churros y chocolate!

After our delicious breakfast, we headed to the Mezquita Cathedral.

In the alcazar we got to take group pictures before heading inside. There are some pictures featured below.

As we entered there were brochures in the entryway. The students were so thoughtful

and made sure I had an English brochure, so I could understand the history and layout of the building.

Inés was an amazing guide and was extremely knowledgeable

and made sure that the students noticed details about the mosque-cathedral that may go unnoticed.

The Mezquita is beautiful. It’s a vast space with large coloured arches painted with red and white stripes.

The most impressive part around the perimeter, in my opinion, is the ceiling of the building

that is painted with intricate designs.

The amount of time and effort that was put into the original design and the upkeep of the building is very impressive.

After the Mezquita we headed to the narrowest street I’ve have ever been in.

It was difficult to make us all fit in a picture but somehow we managed.

One of the next streets over is Calle de los Flores.

It is beautiful. It has small shops and planted pots that hang from the walls that make the street distinctly Spanish.

As we reached the end, we could see the tower peeking through. It was amazing!

After shuffling through the narrow streets, we went to the Posada del Potro.

The inn made me feel like we were with Don Quijote and Sancho Panza. It was like we were in another time.

In the posada there are small exhibits that showcase information about famous flamenco singers and
musicians throughout Spain’s history.

It was fun to watch the students try to identify the artists they had heard of before.

There were videos of flamenco singers that they really enjoyed. I hadn’t listened to much flamenco music before,

so the students found it funny to watch me bob my head to the beat of the song.
Definitely the wrong dance moves for flamenco,
but it was a lot of fun. Fourth ESO said they would help me learn flamenco and sevillanas,
so before I leave I need to take some classes. It is a must!

After some free time, we headed back to the bus. We picked up Borja’s group from the volleyball tournament.

They said they had a lot of fun which was so nice to hear.

On the way back we listened to Crisitina and Maria José sing flamenco.

Their beautiful voices encouraged others to join in and sing. It was an incredible moment to take in and be a part of.

The history and culture that exists not only in the Mezquita, but also in Cordoba is truly spectacular.

It is no surprise to me that the Historic Centre of Cordoba is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Cordoba is a city full of beauty and the thoughtful actions

exhibited by the students made the experience so much more enjoyable.

I am so happy that they had fun in Cordoba.

ACTIVIDADES TERRORÍFICAS EN NUESTRO INSTITUTO

A lo largo de esta última semana se han llevado a cabo una serie de actividades programadas para trabajar la víspera de Todos los Santos y Halloween. Son muchos los departamentos que se han implicado y han hecho actividades como el departamento de Religión en el hall, el departamento de Plástica diseñando con el alumnado sus propios disfraces.

El equipo de la Biblioteca ha lanzado un concurso de relatos terroríficos donde los participantes podían escribir en castellano, inglés y francés. Enhorabuena a los ganador@s.

Por otro lado, el departamento de inglés ha llevado una actividad de Halloween Cards donde el alumnado podría felicitar a un amigo o escribir relatos de miedo en la lengua extranjera. Se han puesto por los pasillos del centro todas estas tarjetas para que todo el alumnado lo pudieran leer.

Por último, el pasado 31 de octubre todo el alumnado del Programa Bilingüe de 1º A y 1º B participó junto con sus profesores de las asignaturas bilingües  y la auxiliar de conversación Neve Macrae en una Gymkana de Halloween en las pistas del instituto.

Con la ayuda y organización del alumnado de 4º ESO  vivieron una experiencia terrorífica en las pistas deportivas del IES Ntra. Sra. de la Estrella.

Entre las pruebas y juegos llevados a cabo , el alumnado disfrutó terroríficamente de los siguientes Games en inglés y español:

Hello everyone!                                                                                                          October 14, 2018

My name is Neve MacRae and I am an English language assistant working at IES Nuestra Señora de la Estrella for this academic school year. I moved to Spain from Canada on September 18, 2018. I have never moved to another country before, so this is the first big adventure that I have undertaken. There is a strong sense of community in Villa del Río and I hope to integrate well into the pueblo lifestyle.

            I am Canadian and have studied languages my whole life. English is my first language, but I started learning French in elementary school and started learning Spanish in grade 10. This past summer, I graduated with a major in Spanish and a minor in French from Dalhousie University. 

            At an early age I was fascinated with language and its ability to connect people from around the world. Not only did I learn this from school, but also from volunteering. I volunteered as an English tutor in high school and in this role, I was able to help students succeed. I felt fulfilled knowing that I was able to help people based on first-hand experience with language.

Already I see the students working hard in their classes. The perseverance shown by the students is something that I apply in my daily life while speaking. It has only been a month, but I know that this is going to be one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I am so excited to be at IES Nuestra Señora de la Estrella. The students and faculty already have made me feel so welcome and I am beyond grateful. Day by day I see faces that I recognize, and it makes me feel at home.

            Thank you for welcoming me into your school and into your community. I know it will be an exciting year full of rewarding experiences for all. Please if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me.

Neve

PROYECTO E-TWINNING 2018-2019

El alumnado de 1º ESO del IES Ntra. Sra. de la Estrella con motivo de su inmersión del inglés a través del programa Bilingüe participará a lo largo del curso 2018-2019 en un proyecto E-twinning con otros alumnos/as de Europa. El proyecto se llama "Teens beyond Borders". Los integrantes de este proyecto Europeo son Italia, Grecia, Rumanía, Francia y España.

Con la idea de motivar a nuestro alumnado a aprender la lengua extranjera. Nos hemos unido a este proyecto donde a lo largo del año los alumnos/as conocerán e intercambiarán información relacionada con sus países . Todo ello con el uso de las nuevas tecnologías (padlets, videoconferencias, power points..) Además de fomentar el respeto por otras culturas de la Unión Europea.

Esperemos que nuestro alumnado se divierta en este proyecto, aprenda y practique cada vez más en inglés y se de cuenta del verdadero motivo de aprender una nuevo idioma. La relación con otros adolescentes de otros países a través de la comunicación y el respeto socio-cultural entre todos.

Ya son casi dos semanas que hemos arrancado las clases. Aquí os presentamos a nuestro "Bilingual Team"para el curso 2018/2019 en 1º ESO:

No nos podemos olvidar de los primeros profesores Juan Antonio Benitez, Francisco López Cosano y a la profesora Dori Civantos que ayudaron a poner en marcha el proyecto el curso pasado. Gracias por vuestra ayuda. Les deseamos mucha suerte en sus nuevos centros.

Ya para terminar, con el objetivo que la Comunidad Educativa participe en el programa Bilingüe, hemos vestido todo nuestro instituto con frases en inglés. Se trata de frases motivadores en el ámbito educativo. Os animamos a leerlas cada vez que paséis por ellas, pensad en positivo y seguro que al final de curso os la sabéis muy bien. Un paso más para aprender un idioma.

WELCOME TO THE BILINGUAL PROGRAMME 2018/2019

Miedos, incertidumbre, inseguridades es lo que muchos de vosotros/as habéis sentido en el inicio de este curso en 1º ESO con el famoso Bilingüismo. No hay nada que temer como hemos ido diciendo a lo largo de esta semana con el inglés.

Sabemos que no es vuestra lengua materna y que la mayoría de vosotros la habéis estudiado unas horas a la semana. Incluso, os ha costado aprobarla en años anteriores.Es por eso que quizás al principio os cueste un poco seguir la mecánica de las clase en las asignaturas bilingues pero si estáis atentos, ponéis de vuestra parte cada día, os vais a acostumbrar y los profesores se van a dar cuenta que os estáis esforzando y estudiando todo lo mandado en clase.

No vale poner excusas con el inglés. Para llegar a la meta es muy importante que pisemos fuerte todos los días en clase, con trabajo y más trabajo y así tarde o temprano llegarán vuestra recompensa. Con respeto, esfuerzo y actitud positiva en clase siempre cualquiera de vosotros/as va a salir victorioso/a tarde o temprano a lo largo del curso. Si cogéis este camino de esfuerzo y trabajo diario, todo el profesorado os ayudará a daros un empujón para llegar a la meta. No dudéis de eso.

Por otro lado, deciros que tenemos muchas suerte este curso 2018/2019. Vamos a tener a una auxiliar de Canadá con nosotros. Se llama Neve Macrae. Ella os va ayudar a entender mejor las materias de Música, Matemáticas, Geografía e Historia y Educación Física, reforzando todo lo aprendido en español a través de juegos, actividades más lúdicas y a la vez aprender y conocer mejor la cultura de su país. Es un privilegio poder contar con ella en nuestras aulas. Así que, aprovechad esta oportunidad y aprender mucho de ella.

Por último, me quiero despedir como coordinadora del programa dando la bienvenida al alumnado de 1ºESO y a sus familias en este curso. Deciros que no dudéis en consultarnos cualquier aspecto sobre el Programa Bilingüe.
